About this location

Originally Ffestiniog Union Workhouse, Bron y Garth was first opened in 1839 and would have housed up to 150 inmates at any one time.

This workhouse was home to mentally and physically ill men, women and even children who were forced to work in the harshest of conditions just to keep food in their bellies and a roof over their heads.

Although this was known as a workhouse, there was need have a separate ward known as the vagrant’s ward and included six prison cells. If you found yourself here you would not only have found yourself in even poorer conditions than the main house, but you were also subject to hours of back breaking hard labour.

In 1897 and following an internal review set up by British Medical Journal to improve workhouse conditions, Ffestiniog was deemed unfit for purpose and was ordered to be extended.

Moving through the years to 1930, Merionethshire Council took control and it was known as the Ffestiniog Public Assistance Institution. In 1948 Bron y Garth Hospital joined the NHS and finally in 1954 it became a home for the elderly and was gradually modernised before closing its doors in 2009.

Amazingly despite the changes of use over the years and sitting empty for over a decade, you will have the opportunity to spend the night walking the hospital wards and prison cells, which still house the empty beds and wheelchairs?

Fancy a night in an old workhouse?
